What is IPL?

For impressive results in your facial skin, you can have intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) at Xage Medical Spa in Provo, UT. Also known as a photofacial, IPL is a skin rejuvenation treatment for adult men and women with hyperpigmentation problems on their face and neck. Board-certified physician Dr. Stuart B. Porter offers IPL at his practice as a noninvasive procedure, yet IPL can still be highly effective and create real results for patients who qualify. With great precision for the Alma Harmony technology, IPL sends intense wavelengths of light energy to heat the skin cells just enough to ignite the natural regeneration process and increase collagen production. As the skin heals you should begin to see a healthier layer with a more even tone and fewer spots of pigmentation. Treatment planning for IPL can begin after a consultation with Dr. Porter, and we can determine how many sessions you may need to reach your aesthetic goals. Get started today by making an appointment at your earliest convenience at Xage Medical Spa.

Am I a Candidate for IPL?

An IPL photofacial works the deeper layers of your skin to treat many complexion problems (especially sun spots and brown lesions) with little or no downtime. Ideal candidates for IPL treatments at Xage Medical Spa will have many issues with their skin, such as sun damage, rosacea, brown spots (hyperpigmentation), rough texture, large pores, redness, freckles, melasma, age and sun spots, or spider veins. When you do not qualify for chemical peels, you may be a great candidate for IPL. We will provide you with a consultation before arranging an IPL treatment to make sure you are an appropriate candidate for this treatment.

How Does IPL Work?

A photofacial is done inside our Provo, UT office in around 20 – 30 minutes in one of our treatment rooms. To start the IPL process, we will wash and dry your skin before covering your eyes with  protection shields. Then, the IPL will be administered using an Alma Harmony handheld device that will be passed over your skin while it emits pulses of therapeutic light energy. While some patients experience discomfort throughout an IPL photofacial, it's generally tolerable because of the quick treatment time. The IPL will break down the skin to eliminate or improve the appearance of dark spots, melasma, and hyperpigmentation areas. As the skin heals, the discoloration should come to the surface and flake off.

What to Expect

There is no recovery period associated with a photofacial treatment, but you will leave our office with your skin a little inflamed and red. The redness should go away naturally. You may be able to mask the redness with cosmetics if you want. Xage Medical Spa recommends patients use a cream on the skin's surface to decrease irritation and speed healing. It also helps to take anti-inflammatory medication to ease swelling. After 2 – 5 days, the sun damage and other irregularities that rested under the skin will rise to the surface skin layers and then start to flake off. It's crucial to protect your skin from the sun at all times after an IPL photofacial and to not pick at your skin.

You may think you only need one IPL photofacial, but to get dramatic results for your skin, you may need subsequent treatments. Then, your skin will continue to improve after each IPL treatment. Dr. Porter recommends most patients get 3 – 6 sessions performed around once a month at Xage Medical Spa. Your complexion will attain ideal results with several IPL photofacial sessions.
